Keeping your smartphone charged all through the day can be a feat – you’ve got to make sure it's at 100 per cent when you leave home, and depending on how fast its juice runs out, you’ve got to have a few charged power banks on you when you’re not close to a power socket.

If that sounds like you, there’s a new concept that’s going to lighten your burden. Designer, Tsung Chih-Hsien, has created a cardboard battery that gives you a couple of extra hours of talktime on your phone.

This Red Dot Design Award winning idea, named Mini Power, is basically just a battery capsule made of cardboard that you break off a perforated sheet and plug into your device – it’s said to kind of act like a vitamin for your smartphone.

Recycle these capsules

There are three different choices of capsules (two, four, or six hours) depending on how much battery time you need. Once you’re done with it, you can dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way since there aren’t any of those plastic bits on it that you’d normally find on other disposable batteries.

Tsung also foresees the biodegradable design to eventually be available from convenience stores, which also makes it easier for them to be sold in bulk if they’re packaged like a sheet of pills.

Of course the tiny battery inside each capsule poses as a problem for disposal but Tsung is quoted saying it can also be recycled by dropping it off at the same convenience store you bought it from. We’re guessing it’s going to be the happy little pill of many if it gets rolled out in future.
