Sony set to reveal an Oculus Rift-like VR gaming headset at GDC next week

PS4 owners could soon be strapping games directly to their faces

Rumours of a Sony VR headset refuse to die out, with the latest whispers pointing to an official reveal at the Game Developers Conference next week.

According to Edge’s sources, numerous third party developers are currently in possession of the headset, and they’re very impressed with it.

Those lucky enough to step into Sony’s virtual world have described the headset as being superior to the Oculus Rift, which is currently at the front of the VR headset race.

Exciting stuff then, but we’re not sure which version of the Oculus Rift the developers are referring to.

Early iterations of the Rift resulted in many users feeling sick, thanks to its lower refresh rates. The improved version that we played with at CES earlier this year brought faster refresh rates and higher resolution screens to the table, and we felt absolutely fine (despite the questionable buffet shrimp cocktails we munched on beforehand).

The Oculus Rift Crystal Cove prototype was even better, pushing VR technology even further by throwing head tracking into the mix for an even more natural virtual experience.

If Sony’s VR headset is better than that, then we really are in for a treat.

This isn’t the first time Sony’s dabbled in screen-to-eyeball headgear. Its personal 3D viewer which was released a couple of years ago offers twin full HD OLED displays with 5.1 virtual surround sound for enjoying movies, but it wasn’t built with gaming in mind.

At £1300, it costs more than both next-gen consoles combined, so we’re praying to the gaming gods that Sony’s upcoming headset will go easy on our wallets.

It’s unclear at this stage whether or not the VR headset will only work with the PS4, but we haven’t got too long to go before all is officially revealed, so stay tuned.
