Francis Olarte, shot on iPhone billboards
If you’ve passed by a large shot on iPhone billboard of a cute little girl at The Verge near Rochor MRT, then you’ve met the niece of Francis Olarte.
The Singapore-based resident's photo makes it on the shot on iPhone campaign for the third time, with a photo that’s close to the heart.
Francis was excited by how quickly the new iPhone 7 was able to capture the water splashes in a flash. "I decided to use the iPhone 7 in water, which previous models couldn’t. Yes, the iPhone changed how I take photos the last few years. I don’t need to carry a bulky camera on my travels anymore.”
Yeow Kwang Yeo for “The Performer”, IPPAWARDS
In the 10th annual iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS), Singapore’s own Yeow Kwang Yeo won runner-up in the Photographer of the Year category for his photo “The Performer”, shot on the iPhone 6 Plus.
Yeow explains the concept behind his winning photo, “Chinese traditional street opera is part of Chinese culture. Unfortunately, the young generation in Singapore is no longer interested. Hence, street opera performances are fast disappearing from the country.”
"Instead of shooting their performance, I decided to go the backstage to capture the performers’ preparation activity. I spotted this experienced performer who was taking a short rest, waiting for his turn to perform. I was attracted by the lighting of the old plastic curtain, electric fan, and the overall calm atmosphere.”
The IPPAWARDS is the first and the longest iPhone photography competition, having been around since 2007 - the year the first iPhone was introduced to the world.
This year, iPhone photographers representing over 140 countries submitted entries in any of the distinct 19 categories - from abstract, animals and architecture, to landscapes, portraits and travel.
