Thank you, LG, for reviving the almost defunct webOS and bringing it to life on 1080p and Ultra High Definition (UHD) 4K TVs.
The South Korean company announced the availability and pricing of its new range of smart TVs. Notably, its 4K TVs are leading the charge this time, all of which are powered by webOS that was acquired by LG a year ago.
In our earlier hands-on, we’ve had positive words for the multitasking feature, one that was perfected by Palm and successfully translated from a mobile to TV platform. The advantage of webOS over most other smart TV platforms is the ease of use and connectivity, all of which have been built from the ground-up to fit the TV rather than blowing up an existing mobile OS to fit a larger screen.
But we guess webOS isn’t the only thing you’ll want to hear about. You’ll probably be on the lookout for the wallet-friendly model, the UB850T which costs S$3999 and S$2999 for the 55in and 49in versions respectively. The UB850T has the usual connectivity options, which includes Miracast, MHL and the near field communication enabled Tag On to tap and connect mobile devices easily. Accompanying its 4K IPS panel is a 2.0-channel 20W sound system, which is equipped with the Ultra Sound audio enhancement.
But if you’re feeling a wee bit generous (and need a larger display), you can choose between the 55in and 65in mid-range UB950T, which also has a slightly more powerful 2.1-channel 35W sound system. Pricing for the UB950T hasn’t been confirmed yet but it’ll be available in June.
Going for broke? The high-end UB980T series has a more powerful 4.2-channel (for the 84in version) or 5.2-channel sound system (for the 79in version), plus it has a stamp of approval by Harman/Kardon. Now as for the pricing, be prepared. The 79in version costs S$14,999 while the 84in goes up to a massive S$24,999.
All three models are equipped with flicker-free 4K 3D technology and are capable of upscaling 4K content, both 2D and 3D.
