Samsung's Galaxy A smartphones get a 2016 update

The affordable alternative to its Galaxy S series comes in three versions, the A3, A5, A7

New year, new phone, right? So how'd you like to start with three updated phones from Samsung's attractive Galaxy A series from 2015?

Think of the 2016 versions of the Samsung Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 as siblings in the same family, with some slight differences in the hardware of each versions.

The most affordable Galaxy A3, which is priced at S$398, is the runt of the pack. A 4.7in 720p screen adorns the front of the Galaxy A3, which also makes it easy for dainty hands to handle the Android smartphone. 1.5GB of RAM runs through the multitasking function of the phone and it runs on a 2300mAh battery.

The Galaxy A5 is the middle child of the group, with decent hardware that includes a 1.5GHz octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM to run the show. Your eyes are in for a treat with its 5.2in full HD display, not too large to stretch your thumbs across the screen or to small to watch Netflix comfortably on the phone. Oh, and a 2900mAh battery means watching a few episodes on the go is possible.

The big brother title goes to the Galaxy A5, packed with all sorts of hardware goodies that include a 1.6Ghz octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM to keep things going. A 5.5in full HD display is suitably sized to let two people binge-watch shows on the smartphone and enough juice in its 3300mAh battery to go through a movie marathon.

All three, however, share similar traits like all siblings do. For a start, the same 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera, both of which have an f1.9 aperture to capture brighter images, are equipped on the three Galaxy A smartphones.

Internal storage stands at 16GB for all three phones. The good news is, you can add more storage via a microSD card slot. For the Galaxy A3, the microSD card slot also doubles up as a second SIM card slot, so you can equip the phone with your work and personal mobile lines. The Galaxy A5 and A7 are less complicated, separating both SIM card slots and the microSD card slot.

Pricing for the Galaxy A5 and A7 is pegged at S$598 and S$698 respectively, with both available in stores from 30 January. The Galaxy A3 will start selling from 16 January.
