Samsung’s Galaxy C7 and C5 are sleek mid-range alternatives to the S7

Premium looks and slightly trimmed specs for the new models

Once upon a time, not too long ago really, Samsung executives said they’d make fewer phones to streamline the lineup. Well, that ended up being a load of nonsense, because the announcements keep coming.

The latest is for the Galaxy C7 and C5, with the new Galaxy line offering a couple of phones that look like premium flagships but have slightly weaker components within. They’re upper mid-range devices, and they have a different kind of look than the Galaxy S7.

From the front and especially the sides, the devices can’t help but seem iPhone-influenced, while the metal back is somewhat akin to the HTC One M9 with its large, center-mounted camera module and familiar-looking antenna lines. It’s not the most original design, but the phones are attractive.

And you’ll find a plenty capable phone within. The larger Galaxy C7 has a 5.7in 1080p Super AMOLED display, with a Snapdragon 625 chip and 4GB RAM within. It has either 32GB or 64GB internal storage and supports microSD cards, with a 3,300mAh battery and a fingerprint sensor.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S5 trims down that built with a 5.2in 1080p screen instead, along with a Snapdragon 617 processor, 4GB RAM, and just a single 32GB storage option (with microSD support, too). It also has the fingerprint sensor, along with a 2,600mAh battery, and both phones have a 16-megapixel back camera and an 8MP front shooter.

In other words, they’re not far from flagships in look or capabilities, but moving ever so slightly away from the cutting edge does result in price drops from the top-tier. The Galaxy C7 should sell for about £270 while the Galaxy C5 comes in around £225.

Those are converted from the Chinese prices, as both models are currently only confirmed for release there. However, the Galaxy C5 was certified by the United States FCC, so a Western release at some point seems likely.
