Qualcomm’s figured out a fix that allows wireless charging for devices with metal exteriors. Its existing tech which goes by the name WiPower has been upgraded to include charging for metal devices.
Currently it uses what is called magnetic resonance that is generally more tolerant than other wireless tech when it comes to metal items such as nearby keys and coins. The upgrade means that it will work better with bigger metal items, including phones.
One of the advantages of wireless charging like Qualcomm's is that tt allows the simultaneous charging of multiple devices with different power requirements.
The WiPower tech isn't sold directly to consumers but to manufacturers of mobile phones and tablets. It might take a while to catch on, unless of course better tech comes along, which we wouldn't bet on not happening.
