Panasonic’s always wanted to make its name in the smartphone industry, but after the failure of its Eluga-branded mobile phones, it was unclear if the Japanese multinational electronics corporation would ever want to try again.

But it has persevered at it and has just launched its Lumix Smart Camera CM1 at Photokina 2014. What’s so great about the Lumix Smart Camera CM1 you ask? It’s a smartphone with a great camera on it (or a great camera with a smartphone on it, however you look at it).

But one thing’s for sure – it’s going to give the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom a run for its money, because just like the latter, this device runs on Android and has a massive snapper affixed on the back of it.

It packs a 1in camera sensor (which is, undoubtedly bigger than the ones you traditionally see on smartphones), which is more commonly found on high-end compact standalone cameras. It also gives you crystal clear images with its 20 MP resolution, and a f/2.8 Leica lens. If you want to record videos, that’s also doable – it records 4K video at 15fps, while 1080p videos are recorded at 30fps.

Smartphone features

But if you thought the massive camera will weigh down the smartphone, you’re wrong; the device is only 21.1mm thick, and weighs 204g.

As for its smartphone features, it boasts a 4.7in, 1080p touchscreen, 16GB of built-in storage, 2GB of RAM, NFC functionality, and a 2600mAh battery, amongst others. It will run on Android 4.4 KitKat, and will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, with a 2.3 GHz quad-core CPU.

The Lumix Smart Camera CM1 is expected to hit France and Germany in November for €899 (about S$1468) but will be rolled out to other markets based on its success in these two countries.
