Modular smartwatch Blocks will launch this summer

Specs and plans for crowdfunding campaign revealed

We last covered the Blocks modular smartwatch back in November 2014, saying it would be on your wrist by November 2015 – and that still looks to be the case.

In fact, you’ll get a proper look at Blocks this summer, as the company has just announced at Taipei’s Computex show that it’s planning to launch soon via a crowdfunding campaign.

But that wasn’t all. Blocks also revealed some specifications and other details about the watch. It will run a modified version of Android 5.0 Lollipop that allows it to pair with both Android and iOS devices; it will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor; and it will come with a circular watch face first, with rectangular and square options following later.

If you’re unfamiliar with Blocks, it’s essentially the Project Ara of smartwatches – a modular system with elements that can be swapped out as required. The watch face will serve as the core unit carrying the CPU, battery, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi antennas, motion sensors and microphone, but links on the watch’s band can be used to customise its performance by adding batteries, specialist sensors and more.

Blocks is built on an open platform, though, so third parties will also be able to build their own modules and sell them via Block’s web store.

Keep your eyes peeled for the crowdfunding campaign this summer, where even more info will drop.
