This might be the most important day for you when it comes to tech announcements and we can’t spell it out any other way – the iPhone 6 you’ve been waiting for has finally been unveiled, and it’s quite the stunner.
Apple’s launched the successor to the iPhone 5S, and thanks to a string of rumours, it’s exactly what we’ve been anticipating and yes, you’ll be tempted to drop whatever other iPhone models you’ve got and go for this one.
We’ll get right down to business and debunk the biggest rumour – there will be two different units: the 4.7in iPhone 6 and the 5.5in iPhone 6 Plus. Both the units are the thinnest Apple’s ever made, with the iPhone 6 sitting at 6.9mm and the iPhone 6 Plus at 7.1mm.
They both boast a Retina HD display, with higher contrasts and deeper blacks but there’s a variation in terms of resolution for the units. The iPhone 6 has a 1334 x 750 resolution with 326ppi, while the iPhone 6 Plus’ is 1920 x 1080 resolution with 401ppi.
The other difference, is that the iPhone 6 Plus is made to show more with its larger size – there will be a special landscape mode its home screen.
Soup-ed up camera
As for its camera, both the units feature an 8MP iSight back snapper with faster autofocus, advanced noise reduction, and next-gen local tone mapping. According to Apple, “it’s a mouthful that gives you a real eyeful”.
It also has a new Apple-designed video encoder that supports 1080p video taking of up to 60 frames per second. The iPhone 6 has a digital image stabilisation, while the iPhone 6 Plus has an added optical image stabilisation (it basically takes better pictures in low-light situations).
And get your selfie pouts ready – the iPhone 6 has improved face detection for selfies and wefies, and the burst selfie mode lets you take up to 10 photos per second before you select the best one out of the lot.
On the inside, both the units house an Apple A8 chipset (13 per cent smaller than the A7 M8 chip) that has up to 25 per cent faster processing power and up to 50 per cent faster graphics.
They will both come out of the box with iOS8, Touch ID, LTE capabilities (it even supports voice-over LTE), and a health app – the M8 coprocessor continuously measures motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass, in addition to NFC capabilities on its Apple Pay (a mobile wallet service that replaces your credit card).
Although, we must add that the functionality will start off in the US, and the i-device maker is looking to expand it to the rest of the world “soon”.
Pricing and availability
The iPhone 6 models will come in three colours – gold, silver, and space grey, in three storage options – 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB. Prices start from US$199 (S$251) (with a two-year contract) for the iPhone 6, and US$299 (S$378) for the iPhone 6 Plus. We’ll update you with local pricing as soon as we get it.
Pre-orders start on 12 September in the US, with availability from 19 September. This availability is also extended to a few other countries including Singapore, but Malaysia is yet to be confirmed.
Oh, and there’s a range of new colourful cases for you to choose from too. Now, it’s time for you to have your pick.
