The 'impossible' happens: SimCity finally has offline mode

EA previously claimed the game could only be played online, when pirates already proved them wrong

Shock! Horror! A gaming miracle! EA has announced the latest SimCity will soon be playable offline in the next update. If you missed the sarcasm in the first five words, we'll excuse you for not knowing the game's troubled history.

The SimCity franchise has had a loyal following much like its sister game The Sims but when it was announced last year, EA stubbornly made it so you needed to be always online to play it. It also claimed removing that 'always online' requirement would be undoable but user-created software mods and hacks soon proved EA wrong.

In an update on the official SimCity blog, General Manager of the Maxis Emeryville studio Patrick Buechner confirmed EA was now working on making the game playable without needing to be connected to the Internet.

Unplugged Sim fun

With what EA calls Update 10, SimCity players now have access to Single Player mode which allows offline play, but without any multiplayer online options. Saved games will be stored locally instead of the cloud like the current version.

Buechner said,"They (players) can now make modifications to the game and its components without compromising the integrity of the Online game." SimCity has quite the community of enthusiast modders, something which might help gain back some of the brownie points lost when SimCity tried to force the game to be always online.

No release date for the update has been announced, but Buechner said modding tutorials would be released very soon in the coming weeks.
