EA kills off online support for classic games with closure of GameSpy

Say goodbye to online gaming for classic games like Command and Conquer and Battlefield 1942

If you've been playing old titles like Command and Conquer and Battlefield 1942 online, that time is coming to an end. As GameSpy is shutting down its servers by the end of May, EA is also pulling the plug on titles that have relied on the service for online battles.

The good news is that EA is only shutting down the online component on 30 June so that gives you an extra 30 days of nostalgia.

It would have come eventually but it's still good to know as it would royally suck to have an online game die on you right in the middle with no possibility of reconnecting. Or so players tell themselves.

GameSpy is dead, long live Gamespy

While there is hope for online service resurrection for games like Crysis 2 (EA is working on that but with no ETA as yet), the older titles and those on console will likely forever remain single-player. After all, you can't host your own server for consoles like the Wii and Nintendo DS.

So gamers, you have one-and-a-half months to play the heck out of some of these games with your friends online.

Here's the list of games affected:
