All six Star Wars movies making digital debut this Friday

The Digital Movie Collection will be available through various storefronts with bonus features

Franchise fever is cranking up again with Star Wars: The Force Awakens due out this December and two more entries out by mid-2017, and Disney has decided to stoke the fan fires by finally releasing the existing films to digital services.

Both the original trilogy and more recent prequel trilogy will debut globally on various storefronts around the globe this Friday, 10 April. From The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi (or A New Hope to Revenge of the Sith, if you prefer release order), you’ll be able to take in the entire current saga via phones, tablets, set top boxes, computers, game consoles and more.

What you’ll get in each case is the same version of the film seen on the Blu-ray release – which means the original trilogy has all of George Lucas’ later tweaks, unfortunately – with all of that bonus content carried over. But there are new extras as well: “Conversations” and “Discoveries from Inside” behind-the-scenes clips for each film.

“These films broke new ground in technology, design, sound, and visual effects, and we’ve created some very special bonus material which delves into the saga’s rich history, including new and never-before-released conversations between legendary Star Wars artists – the masters who helped George bring his iconic universe to life,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Some storefronts may have additional extras – Xbox Video offers an R2-D2 avatar and Pinball FX2 content, among other digital perks – and it looks like each film will sell for US$20 (about £13) apiece, with bundles available in at least some stores (Vudu has the full set for US$90, or about £60).
