Autonomous extras won’t slow down VW’s all-electric I.D. Crozz SUV

US launch confirmed for long before VW's self-driving tech will be ready

Ambitious autonomous driving tech is great and all, but waiting for it is no fun – especially it it means holding off buying that new car you’ve been lusting over. That won’t be a problem for VW’s I.D. Crozz, which has just been confirmed for a 2020 launch in the US – five years ahead of the company’s planned self-driving system rollout. OK, so it won’t take over your commute just yet, then, but dual electric motors with a combined 302 horsepower output should mean you’ll have fun when out on the road. Expect a 300 mile range, and fast-charging support to get you 80% refuelled in half an hour, although flashy extras on the concept car like voice-activated doors and a retractable steering wheel might not make the cut for launch day. There’s no word on a price just yet, but VW is saying it’ll be “affordable”, and roughly on par with other mid-size SUVs when it arrives in less than two years’ time.
