How to access Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio in Singapore

With a few simple steps, you can get a taste of the 24/7 radio station even though it’s not (yet) officially available here

Hear ye, those who’ve updated to iOS 8.4 - Apple Music is upon us. And with it, comes one particular feature that was hyped up during WWDC - Beats 1 Radio.

It’s absolutely free, you don't even need to subscribe to Apple Music. It has DJs fulfilling your music needs, 24 hours, seven days a week. And you don’t even need an Apple Music subscription to hear it.

And it's not available here.

But why would you want it? Because Apple’s getting serious in the music business. Getting Zane Lowe on board Beats 1 was just the tip of the iceberg. In the days, months and perhaps years to come, the future lineup includes Drake, Pharrell and Sir Elton John making appearances on the 24/7 radio station, alongside Dr Dre, St. Vincent, Disclosure and Josh Homme.

Fret not. Even though Beats 1 doesn’t appear in the Radio tab, we’ve got a solution for that.

Step 1: sign in to a US or UK Apple account

If you haven’t created a US or UK Apple account, you’re missing out on a lot of things. Besides gaining access to apps and games that might not be available in this region, the account is also your gateway to the full suite of Apple Music services, including Beats 1. To cut a long story short, perform these steps right now:

  • Step 1: sign out of your Apple ID
  • Step 2: go to the App Store and download a free app. This is important as only a free app download won’t require you to enter any credit card details for a new account
  • Step 3: create a new Apple account with a new email address and select the US or UK region
  • Step 4: verify the account and sign in to your new account

Step 2: get a VPN app

Just having a US or UK Apple ID won’t be enough to gain access to Beats 1. The radio station is also checking where it’s been streamed to. We have three words for this predicament - virtual private network (VPN). And there’s an abundance of them in the App Store. Our recommendation goes to Zenmate. The setup is pretty straightforward too:

  • Step 1: download and install the app
  • Step 2: launch the app, choose US region
  • Step 3: tap on the shield icon, wait till it turns gren and that’s it.

In between, it’ll be creating a VPN profile in your device. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe.

Step 3: launch Apple Music

This is pretty much it. Just launch Apple Music, go to the Radio tab and you should see Beats 1 at the very top. Depending on which account you’re logged into, the featured stations might be slightly different. But one thing that’s consistent - you now have access to Beats 1 Radio.

Plug in and groove on.
