A fairly recent phenomenon, the tradition of Lunar New Year movies is probably less than half a century old, and very likely borne out of that keen Chinese radar for buckets of money - red packet money, that is.
These mostly comedic celebration films also provide some relief from the typically heavier Oscar fare that plagues the earlier months of the year, so they stand a good chance of doing quite well at the box office regardless of their quality.
So this year we’ve put together a list of nine (a lucky number) classic lunar new year films that have, and will undoubtedly still exponentially multiply the joy, laughter and prosperity of your Lunar New Year break. We’ve excluded Stephen Chow’s movies because we’ve got a whole other article dedicated to him right here.
