8 awesome indie games to play with (or against) friends

Who's ready for some friendly competition?

Tired of screaming into your mic at a game full of strangers, or squinting at distant enemy targets in your half of the divided television screen? With online multiplayer gaming platforms, such as Origin and Steam, the gaming world is more connected than ever. Most games are implemented with multiplayer modes, but some indie developers are taking it to the next level.

Cute, classic or experimental, these games are half the price and double the fun! In the end, nothing beats huddling around a screen with a friend, working together as teammates or pitting against each other in a deathmatch. Whatever the outcome, expect lots of yelling and violent episodes.

Risk of Rain (S$10.50 / S$29.00 for a 4-pack)

A 2D action platformer with roguelike elements, Risk of Rain is not your typical shoot- em-up. Get launched into an unforgiving planet filled with randomly-spawning enemies, and survive. Players begin with one of ten unlockable characters, each with four unique abilities and playstyles. Find invaluable items from boss kills, chests, and casino-like statues that can leave you broke and empty-handed.

As if permanent death isn’t enough, the game also laughs and makes snarky remarks at you when you die. Donning a charming pixel artstyle and excellent soundtrack, Risk of Rain also features partial controller support, so hook up and play!

Risk of Rain is available in the Steam store.

Magicite (S$10.50 / S$29 for a 4-pack)

Magicite is a vast, quick-paced 2D multiplayer RPG roguelike with invitingly cutesy, pixelated and colourful graphics. Join your friends as a Warrior, Ranger or Mage, and explore randomly-generated biomes and underground dungeons.

Harvest your surroundings, such as wood, stone and precious ores to construct improved weapons and armour in a 3x3 crafting grid. Roll your stats, gear up, and slay enemies to unlock more playable characters and races, collect epic loot and complete challenges! With permanent death always around the corner, you’ll need your friends more than ever. With constant updates from the developer, Magicite continues to grow.

Magicite is available in the Steam store.
