Gadget of the Day: Garmin Forerunner 305

It's that time of year when the nation's unfit resolve to get in shape, then postpone in favour of the wine-drinking route to a better heart. Don't join them, you'll only make a fool of yourself – check out this GPS personal trainer instead.

The Forerunner 305 will continuously monitor your heart rate, speed, distance, pace and calories burned, and suggest programs without sniggering uncontrollably.

You can compete against previous workouts stored on the device, or even train against a Virtual Partner if your mates are way too fit. The included Training Center software lets you tailor workouts further on your PC, and it'll last for 10 hours on a typical charge, long enough even for the most pathetic marathon attempt.

The bad news is that it's US only for the moment, going for $380 (£220) in the land of excess lard. We'll let you know when it makes the likely leap across the pond this year.
