Before Sonic, there was Alex Kidd – and After Burner, and Chase HQ, and California Games. A time when having 16 bits was considered a rare disease. When a bundled game would be Super Hang-On, not Wii Sports.

We speak, younglings, of the Sega Master System. Once Europe's number-one console, it's now back – thanks to the Wii. Yes, the eight-bit gamer is coming to Nintendo's Virtual Console for hours of retro gaming fun.

It'll be landing in Japan first with Fist of the North Star (the original Japanese version of single player kung-fu mash-up Black Belt) and the pretty much classic Fantasy Zone, that'll have us once again battling gigantic fish and evil turtles from a tiny 2D spacecraft in a landscape more garish than a discount Hawaiian shirt.

Between 500 and 600 points is all you'll need for these gaming fossils – and look out too for handheld Game Gear titles. Perhaps we could throw away four AA cells every 20 minutes for added nostalgia...
