It seems that the long-awaited widescreen video iPod – complete with touchscreen and virtual scrollwheel – may not appear until 2007. If it appears at all.
According to industry news site EE Times, PC video specialist Nvidia has recently signed a deal with Apple to supply video chips for its next range of video-playing iPods.
The problem is that the changeover from the old PortalPlayer chip has put development back three months, which makes it highly likely that the ‘vPod’s’ original winter launch will get pushed over to the wrong side of Christmas.
An iPod like the one above still seems likely at some point, as Apple filed a patent for touchscreen controls last year. It’ll need to have more than a new interface, though, if all the rumours about Microsoft’s ‘Zune’ (see link below) are to believed – the ‘Gatespod’ will apparently have Wi-Fi file-sharing, MySpace-style community features and is scheduled to hit Europe in, you guessed it, early 2007.
