What to expect from Google I/O tonight

A world-first Google tablet, a full Google Cloud service, and project glass could be revealed in all their glory later

The Mighty Google is descending from the mountaintops later today to share with us mortals its latest creations at the Google I/O event.

Reasons to be excited include Google’s first tablet, the Nexus 7, being unveiled. This is more than likely after full specs and pictures of the Amazon-Fire-attacking tablet leaked online. Expect Android Jelly Bean OS, a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and NFC all from only $200 (£130) for the 8GB model. Google’s updated 3D maps with offline access will likely get a mention here too.

Another exciting announcement should come in the form of a Google Cloud launch. The recent expansion of Google Docs and the unveiling of the Google Drive were just a pre-cursor to tonight. The Google Cloud will tackle Amazon’s EC2 effort, offering a platform that makes it easy for developers to write, deploy, and manage apps for online use.

Finally, and most tantilising of all, is Google Glass. It’s unlikely the augmented reality glasses are ready to launch but even another glimpse at their progress will be enough to leave us starry eyed.

The keynote begins today at 5.30pm (UK time) and we'll be here to bring you up to speed on all the latest news. See you then.
