Vodafone and Sony NetServices are teaming up to provide a pick’n’mix radio service for your 3G mobile, featuring interactive personalised radio channels.
Vodafone Radio DJ will be available on a monthly subscription, and is based on three elements - predefined channels, personal channels and collections.
Basically you have access to hundreds of thousands of songs from mainstream and independent recording labels, streamed radio channels and bespoke collections, and the idea is that you personalise them to whatever you fancy. By skipping rubbish tracks on a predefined channel you can train the service to create a new personal one.
It’s pretty simple. You just press ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ when listening to a song and the service analyses the songs you bin and then plays you more stuff in common with your own discerning taste.
They’ve also thrown in themed collections of around 15 songs selected by local music experts and celebs.
It’s a pretty great way of listening to the radio without smashing it in frustration after too many Barry Manilow numbers, and could provide competition for Motorola's new iRadio service (story here). Hang the blessed DJ indeed.
There’s no news yet on how much the subscriptions will be, but the service will be coming to the UK in the next few months, and go worldwide within a year. We’ll let you know when we've had a spin on its decks.
