The demise of the vacuum tube in favour of the much more sensible transistor still brings a tear to the audiophile’s eye, but it’s not extinct yet – this modern Vincent CD player brings them back for old time’s sake.

The CD-S6 combines all the convenience of modern solid-state tech – smaller size and lower cost – with a touch of traditional valve magic, which you can see glowing in the window on the front.

The vacuum tubes aren’t just there for show – they apparently add their classic warmth and to the usual dynamic sound you get from solid-state electronics to help keep the strings warm and the bottom end meaty.

A 24-bit DAC converter from high-end stalwarts Burr Brown and an oversized Vincent power supply also help to explain the unit’s weight – 9kg – and its wallet-bashing price tag of £900.

If you’re in for a high-end hi-fi setup, though, there’s no point stopping with the CD-S6 – it’ll go perfectly with Vincent’s hybrid SA-T1 stereo amp, which you can snap up for just £750 extra.
