Following the launch of iTunes Plus, I’ve heard on the grapevine (which is DRM-free incidentally, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to share this with you) that Universal is in talks with iTunes to follow EMI and Warner and offer up unprotected content on Apple’s download store.

According to some ‘well-placed sources’ the Universal bosses – who deal with artists such as Queens of the Stone Age, Sonic Youth and Klaxons – are chatting to Steve Jobs about variable pricing and watermarking in exchange for stripping DRM from their tunes.

If it was to go ahead it’d mean 50 per cent of ‘The Big Four’ would be committed to unprotected downloads on iTunes – a major landmark in the industry and one that would surely have to see the rest follow suit.

Looks like this one just ain't going away, so why not have your say in our forums?
