Sat-nav may empower us with the knowledge of a London cabbie (minus the mildly offensive opinions) but without traffic updates it's liable to leave you wedged between a caravan and an HGV on the by-pass while cars whiz idly by on the b-road. TomTom's solution is this add-on for its GO range.Resembling a laptop mouse, the dinky Traffic Receiver suckers itself to your windscreen and trails TMC updates back to the mother ship via a plug-in cable. Possible hold-ups are flashed up on screen long before Sally Traffic has even made it to the studio. One tap then re-routes the journey down back lanes and rat runs to avoid delays.TMC does have its drawbacks - it only works on motorways and major routes - but, like Freeview, once you've bought the box there's no more to pay. Just plug in, download a software update and go. It's what your sat-nav's been waiting for.
