TomTom enlists the Highways Agency so you can avoid car crash tailbacks

Dutch satnav specialists supercharge HD Traffic service with road surface monitoring tech

TomTom’s HD traffic was already pretty good. It told you when there was a snarl-up ahead and guided you by an alternative route. Now that traffic-dodging nous has been supercharged thanks to a deal with the Highways Agency. Data supplied by the agency covers 4300 miles of motorways and A roads in the UK, using monitoring tech built into the road surface.

That traffic flow data is synced with accident reports (also collected by the Highways Agency) to help you avoid slow traffic and tailbacks following car crashes. Just make sure you keep your eyes on the road, not on your satnav’s screen – you want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
