The Australian Drum'n'Bass sensation Pendulum played an intimate, exclusive gig at Fabric on the 12th of May to launch their new album In Silico in association with Xbox LIVE. They are the latest act to offer exclusive content to gamers who can now download music videos straight to their Xbox. We talk to them about the tech that swings their things...
Our lives are full of technology
Gareth – We live it, literally live it. Especially as the production of the music is so laden with technology, and with our lifestyles – being travelling musicians and DJs – we need to be connected everywhere we go. So technology is absolutely essential to the process.
Verse –The tour bus is like a gadget shop, basically.
Kodish – Yeah, there's an Xbox in every bunk. They're everywhere, you name it – even in the toilet!
We use a lot of tech in production, but don't like it to control our sound
Gareth – We record all the instruments as a band would, then we get it back to the studio and just tear it to pieces, the way you would with samples. It's like sampling yourself, really.
There are a lot of computers involved in our live sets
Gareth – Our live show is one hundred per cent live – we're doing electronic music one hundred per cent live. But to do that we need about 13 computers running simultaneously, because it's all processed live.
Verse – And then there are 13 backups to back those up, so there are actually 26 running at any one point. And that's how it sounds like a 'wall' of sound – so powerful.
Gareth – I don't think many electronic bands have been able to capture what you can in the studio, live, because there are a lot of variables in the live environment. We wanted to be able to achieve close to, if not more than, that full sonic experience when we play live.
We're waiting for Drum Hero to come out
Gareth – We been playing a lot of Dead or Alive and Ridge Racer – they're the two main ones really. I like a lot of the Star Wars games as well.
Kodish – I've asked Microsoft to put out a new one – it's called Drum Hero. You have to drink 6 pints before you can play Stairway to Heaven properly.
Rob and Gareth are most into technology
Gareth – Rob's just one-upped me though. He's just bought an OQO. It's a tiny little thing – a cool little PC running windows XP.
We don't do ringtones
Kodish – We usually all have our phones set on silent, really. Perry's got a good one though.
Perry – Yeah, the guitar riff from Bohemian Rhapsody
Facebook causes problems
Gareth – I use Facebook just for people I actually know, and keep MySpace for promotion.
Verse – Oh I don't use Facebook – too many problems. Female problems. Relationship status things, mainly! There are friends and then there are 'friends'.
