T-Mobile giving dissatisfied customers an iPhone 3G?

We mentioned a while back that T-Mobile was sneaking unlocked iPhone 3G handsets into Britain. Now it looks like they're handing them out to customers who threaten to ditch the network.

O2 officially has the exclusive on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS but according to The Register, T-Mobile is circumventing that with unlocked European models.

There is a catch: the offer of an iPhone 3G to stay in T-Mobile's embrace isn't open to every customer. Only high spenders (£75 a month or more) will be able to get their hands on one and there's only 150 a week to snaffle.

T-Mobile has an exclusive hold on the iPhone in Germany but this little ruse is likely to ruffle feathers with Steve Jobs' mafia and O2.

So why are T-Mobile going to the trouble of all this cloak and dagger iPhone 3G selling? Essentially, the owners are looking to sell the company and are getting it shipshape to make it more appealing to sell.

So, are you a high-rolling type that's looking to leave T-Mobile? Have they offered you an iPhone 3G to keep your sweet? Let us know in the comments.
