The third instalment in the Super Smash Bros series goes online and features a bevy of new, and somewhat surprising, characters.
Super Smash Bros: Brawl is a beat-’em-up similar to its predecessors. You pit up to four familiar Nintendo characters against each other in the ring. Mario, Link, Pikachu – they’re all up for a fight and even the Nintendogs make an appearance.
However, unlike the earlier games, Brawl now features third-party characters. Enter Sonic from the Sega camp and Snake from Konami’s Metal Gear Solid series.
It’s also the first of the Super Smash Bros games to support online battles through Wi-Fi, so those Diddy Kong peanuts could be fired at you from anywhere in the world.
And when you’ve grown bored of Wario’s new fart attack (we kid you not) in the arena, there’s a new Adventure Mode. Titled The Subspace Emissary, it takes the form of a traditional side scrolling level based story with multiple bosses to fight.
The gameplay is fast and chaotic, but Super Smash Bros: Brawl’s release in the US has seen rave reviews on many American gaming sites.
Brits won’t be stepping in the ring until May, but we welcome early bets in our forums.
