What is it?

Quad HD is exactly what its name suggests: video resolution four times that of current HD signals. 4K, a related technology, is a similarly hi-res video format used for digital cinematography.

Why should I care?

Remember how amazing you thought HD was compared to the standard-def picture of your old CRT?

Quad HD is that big a change, again. Instead of top-end HD’s 1920x1080, Quad HD has a resolution of 3840x2160 – that means pin-sharp images even close up. 4K has a slightly higher resolution: 4096x2304.

When is it coming?

Toshiba has just shown a 56in Quad HD telly that upscales source 1080p material using a Cell processor (as found in the PS3). But don’t fret – 1080p will be the standard native resolution for the foreseeable future thanks to manufacturing costs and the lack of content.

4K is designed ?to be a future-proof film format primarily for use in digital cinema projection systems, and 4K video cameras are built for pros.
