Stuff Gadget Awards 2012 – Tablet App of the Year shortlist

We’ve slaved over our slates and toiled over our tablets to sift through the year’s best apps for big-screened mobile devices

2012 has been a big year for tablets, and therefore a big year for tablet apps – and just look at these wonderful examples if you don’t believe us. Read on for our Tablet App of the Year shortlist.

£Free iTunes

Looking for some new digs? Well, whether you’re buying or renting this app could prove an invaluable companion, letting you browse properties via a glorious map view, take a closer look at floor plans and contact agents directly. You can also search for nearby homes using the iPad’s GPS.

Find a Property Search App

£Free Google Play

If you’re not a fan of the default web browser on your Android tablet, never fear: the Firefox app is a worthy alternative, with synced history, bookmarks and passwords across all your devices, support for custom add-ons and supercharged speed.

£Free iTunes

If you’re an existing Sky Sports subscriber and iPad owner, this app is a no brainer: you can watch live football, F1, cricket and more with bags of extra stats and info to pore over while you do it. You can even remotely set recordings on your Sky+ box.

£Free iTunes

It was a long time coming, but the iPad-tailored edition of Spotify’s app is a real winner, offering a slicker (and obviously more hi-res) experience than the standard iOS software.

£2.99 iTunes

If the idea of photo editing on a tablet seems ludicrous, five minutes with iPhoto will convince you otherwise. A bargain-priced app that shows off the glory of the iPad’s Retina Display screen – and is genuinely useful into the bargain.

Sky Sports for iPad

£Free Google Play/iTunes

Turns tedious, dull-looking Google Reader RSS feeds into beautiful magazines to peruse at your leisure on your iPad or Android tablet. Your subscriptions sync across all your devices, and you can read offline if you don’t have mobile data.
