Sony's new Alpha 7s gets 4K video output

Out in summer, this might just be the upgrade to the mirrorless range you've been looking for

It wasn't too long ago that Sony launched the A7 and AR cameras. But it's not resting on its laurels, having just announced the A7s, a lens-swapping E mount compact system model that uses the same compact body as those cameras but a different 12.2-megapixel sensor. And the kicker here is that the camera can do 4K video.

Just to be clear, the camera doesn't do 4k video natively. You need to hook it up to an external 3rd party 4K recorder for that. But you can record full HD (1920x1080) to memory cards at the following frame rates: 60p, 60i, 30p and 24p. You can also switch between full-frame and APS-C.

The 4K video feature is new to Sony for this range and it's just one of many features added to this particular body. There is also a Dual Record feature that lets the camera capture both a 50Mbps XAVC S stream as well as a lower bitrate 720p stream.

Power in a lightweight body

Looks-wise, the camera looks a lot like its older brethren. It also supports wireless transfers with Wi-Fi and NFC, and you can make use of the Multi Interface Shoe to add Sony add-ons like the XLR-K1M mic adapter kit.

Sony also announced it will be developing a complementary full-frame power zoom 28-135mm F4 lens E-mount lens.

The first compatible 4K recorder add-on for the A7s will apparently be the Shogun from Australian company Atomos. It's a 7in monitor/recorder unit that'll connect to the A7s via HDMI and, in addition to 4K, will be able to record HD footage at 120fps for butter-smooth slow motion playback. It won't be available until later in the year (Atomos says late autumn/early winter) and will cost under US$2,000 (£1,200).

Pricing and availability has yet to be announced, but Sony says the camera should be available by summer. You should, however, expect to pay substantially more than the £1,300 Sony's asking for the A7.
