'Sony' and 'budget' are two words that don't generally go together, but although we're still waiting for a price tag Sony promises its new VPL-VW40 will open up the hitherto cripplingly expensive world of high-def projection to the masses.

Given the name, it should come in below the £3,500 VW60 – an award-winning beast of high repute. It still spits out 1080p and 24fps for movies, plus a super-fast 2.5ms response time for gaming.

We're less excited about the 15,000:1 contrast ratio, which doesn't quite cut the 35,000:1 clarity of its higher-priced siblings. But it's no embarrassment.

It's just as quiet as its brothers too, and benefits from Sony's Bravia Engine processor for lush pictures. After that it's just a case of hanging the black-out blinds, hooking up the Sky HD box and PS3 to the two HDMI slots, and preparing to never leave the house again.
