Sony VPL-VW1000ES projector says 4K is the new 1080p

All you need to do now is find a wall that will fit its massive 200in image

Update 09/09/11: Sony has confirmed the VPL-VW1000ES will now be available in January 2012, with an estimated price of US$25,000.

You spend all your time saving up for that sweet 1080p projector, and then when you can finally afford it Sony goes and shatters your dreams by announcing the VPL-VW1000ES projector that packs a mighty 4K resolution. That's around 8.9m pixels versus 1080p's puny 2m pixels.

We know you're drooling already, so it's probably best to grab a bucket before reading on. Sony claims this highly covetable projector has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 2,000 ANSI lumens of brightness and will project up to a whopping 200in image.

Want more? Here you go – because not everyone (anyone) has 4K resolution movies lying around (unless they go out and shoot it themselves on a RED Epic camera), it'll upscale SD and HD content, both 2D and 3D. If you can find a 4K 3D film, it'll beam that on your wall too, using an integrated IR transmitter and active shutter 3D specs.

Available in the US "this winter", it's likely to break the bank when it turns up. Come on pennies, back in the piggy bank you go…
