Now, we don’t like to say ‘we told you so’ but, well, we did.Mere seconds ago Sony’s faithful carrier pigeon, Fernando, landed at Stuff Towers with news of a brand new version of the PS3 – a £300 40GB unit with a few features knocked off. Not only that but he left us one to play with which you can see on our video page. In other cracking console news, the ‘normal’ 60GB model we know and love is due to drop in price to £350 with two games – but only for Christmas. Bonus! The new 40GB model looks almost identical to the standard one bar a few minor changes along the front: the media card reader has been lopped off and the USB count has been halved, leaving you with just two ports – still enough to charge your SIXAXIS pads or attach an external hard drive. The guts are practically identical though; Blu-ray movie playback remains, as does Wi-Fi, but you will have to sacrifice backwards compatibility, so no more upscaling your PS2 copy of God of War II.The new model now sits as a direct competitor to Microsoft’s identically priced, HDMI-sporting Xbox 360 Elite, although with a hi-def drive as opposed to a larger hard drive. Which one would we go for? Both, of course.
