It may have launched last millennium – well, 1999 – in Japan, but i-Mode has only just started to flaunt its web on-the-go wares in the UK. Sony Ericsson could raise its stock, though, with its first i-Mode handset.

The K610im looks a strong 3G handset even without the new feature – it’s got a 2MP camera, a 1.9in QVGA display and weighs only 89g, which is light considering the heavyweight functionality.

The camera is also further improved by VGA video calling and a bundled Xenon flash, which brings it into line with the Cybershot range.

The i-Mode functionality spices up the usual multimedia fare, though, by offering web access (at speeds faster than WAP) to over 150 specially optimised sites including eBay, and push e-mail access.

There’s also handy music options with over-the-air downloads, and a bundled 64MB microSD card, which now go up to 1GB.

The K610im will be available in the UK from O2 in the fourth quarter – between October and Christmas – although pricing has yet to be announced. Have a gander at Sony Ericsson’s site for more.
