Most car ads these days make about as much sense to me as a thermo-dynamics textbook being read backwards – in Esperanto. It's not that I'm baffled by the engine speak (there normally isn't any) it's just that the concepts are so far removed from actual driving that the ads end up as some hotshot production team just showing off their editing skills. So to focus on safety (albeit in a very cool way) in this new Smart ad makes a nice change.I came to it via this special 'making of' vid on YouTube which shows the filming of the ad, in which a wrecking ball is swung at a seemingly defenceless little Smart car, with a hard-hat-wearing chap sat in the driver's seat. A braver man than I.At first I was sceptical. You never get to see the front of the car at or after impact so I suspected some sort of camera trickery, but take a look at the full advert:
