We’ve been waiting for it since early 2007, but now Sling Media’s SlingCatcher, a receiver that plugs into your TV and plays wirelessly streamed video, is finally ready for pre-order in the UK.
As its name suggests, Sling Media’s new box is all about ‘catching’ streamed video rather than, like its siblings, ‘throwing’ it anywhere in the world via your broadband connection.
The box has three built-in apps. The coolest of these is SlingProjector, which lets you send any internet video – including BBC iPlayer and YouTube – from your computer to your TV. Video is upscaled if you’re connecting via the HDMI, and you can set the box to only show the video and not the website’s surrounding graphics.
The second, SlingPlayer, is ideal if you already have a Slingbox. It lets you stream video from one TV in your house to another wirelessly, or pick up the video streamed from your Slingbox at home and, for example, play it on the telly in a hotel room.
Finally, SlingSync allows you to connect a USB stick or external hard-drive directly to the SlingCatcher and play video files stored on that.
The SlingCatcher is the first Sling Media box to come with a remote, and is available for pre-order from tomorrow. We’ll have a full review soon.
