EA has launched a film competition with a difference. It's looking for short films starring characters from The Sims games.Apparently it's all to do with that sweeping craze 'machinima'. Yes, that's right, the one that uses computer games as a cheap method of animation, with audio dubbed in afterwards. And, what was that at the back there? French democracy? Oh The French Democracy - indeed, a 12-minute machinima film which looks at the riots in the French suburbs and is being hailed by critics as the film to push the genre into the mainstream.Anyway, back to the competition. It's open to anyone but if you're movie-making skills stretch to adding a window-pane fade in Windows Movie Maker then you can always play around with the online editor on the Sims Shorts website and create something passing for an original epic. Alas it won't be eligible for entry to the competition, that's for DIY machinima creators only. Those with their own editing software can enter online between now and 10th December. The winner will pick up a cheque for £1000 and see their masterpiece in Vue cinemas for four weeks from 23rd December. Now go, get creating.
