Sanyo Xacti dons a waterproof

The Samsung Miniket has been king of the rugged camcorder market for many a year, but now there’s a new competitor for its place in the backpacks of skiers and surfers – this new rubber-clad Xacti. The CA6 is effectively its old C6 in a diving suit, although it’s not completely waterproof – Sanyo prefers to use the term ‘water-resistant’, which means it can take the odd splash but won’t do for your underwater ‘swimming with porpoises’ documentary.Apart from the new casing, the spec sheet is largely the same – it can record 6MP stills or 640x480 pixel video onto an SD card (which isn’t bundled) and has an image stabiliser to help with whatever extreme sports shenanigans you’re up to.It also has a few of the Xacti’s signature touches, including the ability to shoot video and stills simultaneously, the vertical orientation for one-handed use, and a rotating 2in LCD. One other nice touch is a new Web-SHQ mode, which lets you shoot video at 30fps in 320x240 pixels for playback on media players like an iPod video. The CA6 is currently only available in the US for a very reasonable $400 (£210), but Sanyo has told us that it’ll be hitting our stores in September. Expect an update on official pricing later this week.
