Sammy’s been teasing us with idle chat about an 8MP cameraphone for months now. But tech-heads at the Korean giant have now officially shown off a dinky CMOS sensor that’ll have your cell taking snaps that could beat your regular point-and-shoot’s efforts hands down.
Clocking in at a Moss-baiting 8.5mm, the new sensor doesn’t just shoehorn in 8MP – Samsung says the module also packs face-detection tech and even anti-shake, meaning we’re not just talking another notch up in the megapixel wars.
Slinging one of these little beasts into say, the successor of the mighty Samsung G810 or the super-sleek Soul, could see cameraphones become truly converged pieces of kit. Not just places to stash blurry pics of low-rent celebs kicking it in Leicester Square.
And what’s really got us buzzing at Stuff Towers is that Sammy expects the module to make its way into phones in the second half of this year.
For now though, it looks like we’ll have to keep on trucking with those oh-so-passé 5MP models. * Sigh *
