Launch one console then bring out a sexier updated version a few months later. Sound familiar Nintendo DS owners? Well this time the House of Mario has let slip before the first version even goes on sale that a 'premium' edition will be hitting the shops in the 'latter half' of next year. The reason? It seems the omission of DVD playback has been preying on its sprite-addled mind. So Sonic Solutions, responsible for most of the DVD software that comes bundled with PCs, has been brought in to do a patch up job.Apparently that's more than simply adding on some software and performing a quick firmware upgrade – a whole new version is required. Paying the license fees to spin movies will also bump up the price so it looks like the original machine will stay on as a cheaper edition. Whether any other goodies will go in to the premium model remains to be seen.It may cause some to pause for thought come 8th December but probably not enough for next-gen starved gamers to wait several months. DVD playback was exciting on the PS2 but, come 2006, who hasn't already got a player on every telly and PC in the house?
