Rockstar’s clearly been into rehab to curb its hyper-violent ways – it’s just announced a new game called Table Tennis for the Xbox 360.
The innocuous title isn’t a front for a controversy-courting beat ‘em-up. According to maker Rockstar San Diego, it will simply recreate the simplicity and addictiveness of a sport more associated with family holidays than next-gen gaming.
That’s right, there’ll be no grating faces with table tennis bats or crushing bodies in fold-away tables – all the 360’s processing and graphics power will be channelled into making Table Tennis one of the most realistic ‘sports’ sims ever.
With sequelmania and franchises dominating the gaming charts, it’s refreshing to see a bit of lateral development.
Rockstar has no doubt grown tired of Grand Theft Auto lawsuits and aghast principals trying to ban the forthcoming Bully, and produced a slightly tongue-in-cheek comeback.
That’s not to say the game is a novelty title – the screenshot above has got us genuinely intrigued, and it certainly won’t have much trouble eclipsing the only other table tennis sim we know, the PS2’s Spin Drive Ping Pong.
Table Tennis is expected to hit UK shelves on the 26th May this year for £30 – pencil it in for a future ‘Play with Stuff’ challenge.
