So, you bought your nephew the latest Robosapien for Christmas, and thought that would be the end of it. Well, keep this bad news to yourself for the minute – manufacturers Wowwee have just pulled the cloth off a super-evolved, emotive brother called the P.E.A Bot.
Standing for Personality Evolved Android (we’ve got money on the Black Eyed P.E.As forming within two years), his most notable feature is that he appears to have a Segway for feet. Actually, he does – the two companies collaborated on the project, presumably since it became apparent that consumers would rather just watch George Bush fall off the ‘human transporter’ than buy one.
His face looks familiar too – yes, it’s that thing most of you stare into every day, a computer monitor. At the moment the prototype only has a default mug, but Wowwee say they’re looking into the option of add your own PC soon. It’s not quite up to ASIMO’s tea-making, but we wouldn’t say no to web surfing a robot’s face.
If he looks too much like a menacing wallet-troubler, there is a new Robosapien in the pipeline too – the RS2 Media is the same beast as the V2 but adds an LCD screen for viewing images taken by the headcam, and an SD slot for storing data. As with most robots, UK availability is sketchy – both are expected to reach the here late this year, or early 2007. Keep an eye on Wowwee’s site for their latest ‘bot bulletins.
