It had to happen – the PSP's biggest weakness has been addressed. No longer do you have to cram all your music and photos onto the puny 32MB Memory Stick Duo that comes with your PlayStation Portable; now you can buy a 4GB hard drive and turn your PSP into an oversized video iPod.

Datel are the company responsible for the hard-drive add-on, and it has supplied the disk with one of its X2 battery packs – which apparently doubles the PSP's 6-hour battery life (although we can only assume the hard drive will eat up much of that extra life).

The thick battery pack replaces the PSP's slimline battery, while the hard drive plugs in to the other side, as shown above, to create a symmetrical (if chunky) appearance. Unfortunately, you also need to run cable from the drive to the USB port on top of the PSP.

The battery and hard-drive pack is available for pre-order from Dark Planets at £150 - which makes it less than half what you'd pay if wanted the same capacity from Memory Sticks. And 4GB gives you enough room for a couple of movies (illegally) ripped from DVD or a whopping 1000 songs (illegally) ripped from CD. If you want to keep on the right side of the law, you could just use the space to store 10,000 photographs...

Thanks to the eagle-eyed Eden Dwek for alerting us to this hard drive - we'll do our best to get our mitts on one and report back…
