Our eyebrows were already raised at the PS3’s rumoured price of £425, and now they’ve disappeared over the back of our head – online store Play.com is taking pre-orders today for the console at £550.

In a word, ouch. This is admittedly a price for the flashy 60GB version with Wi-Fi and 1080p video via HDMI and three games, but really… £550? It looks like you’ll be able to buy a 360, a Wii and an iPod Nano for that cash when it launches in November.

Play.com thinks the exact date will be 17th November, and even at this stage can’t guarantee a delivery before Christmas due to an ‘expected European shortage’.

That’s the kind of talk you’d expect from a shop trying to snag as many pre-orders as possible, and it may be that the price is a stunt to cash in on the early PS3 hype. We’re still hoping the console alone will cost close to the £425 mark [story here].

Stay tuned for (many) more updates before the winter of console contentment.
