Team Blu-Ray has really cranked up the pressure this week – we’ve seen Sony’s first laptop and desktops to sport the drive, and now Pioneer has announced its own Blu-Ray disk writer.

The BDR-101A is the second drive of its kind we’ve seen – Samsung got there first with the SH-B022 – and supports the burning of single-layer write-once (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE) discs.

That doesn’t quite match the dual-layer burning of Sony’s RC204 desktop, but one side of a Blu-Ray disc will still hold up to 25GB of data, which is two hours of HD content, or a truck-load of standard-def archiving.

Pioneer’s disc-eater is due to go on sale in June for around £550 – go to its site for directions on which on-line retailers will be stocking them.
