PictureMate grows up

One of our favourite printers-that-looks-like-a-toaster (one of Stuff's more prestigious awards) has been given a 2005 upgrade. Yep, the Epson PictureMate finally has a colour screen and an x-D memory card slot

We were such big fans of the old Epson PictureMate that we gave the photo printer 4 stars in our December issue. Now Epson's truly spoiling us by calling it the PictureMate 500, adding a colour LCD, a battery for portable printing and more memory card slots.

It still looks distinctly like a smart toaster, but the beefy upgrades bring this bad boy into line with the competition from Canon's Selphy photo printers. The full list of memory cards supported is now insanely comprehensive: CompactFlash® (I&II), xD-Picture Card™, SmartMedia™,SD Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, Magic Gate Memory Stick, Memory Stick®, Memory Stick PRO™, IBM Microdrive™. Adapter required for Mini SD Card, Memory Stick Duo,Memory Stick Pro Duo and MagicGate Memory Stick Duo.

The full spec on the PictureMate 500 can be found over on Epson's website. You can buy yourself one now for £180.
