We all know that UV rays are bad for our health, but actually knowing how long we should be out in the sun has been left in the hands of TV weather presenters who invariably get the weather wrong.

Never fear, those clever chaps at Oregon Scientific are here to save you from a wrinkly future. They plan to make sure that lying on the beach won’t turn your skin into leather - all for the small price of £20.

The Oregon Personal UV monitor works out what the UV levels are and, once you’ve told it what your skin type is and what factor sun cream you’re sporting, it’ll tell you how long you can safely be out in the sun. It has a built in clock too, so you can wear it instead of your watch if you fancy a change.

The Oregon monitor may not be the only UV device knocking around – there are others available, including the Sun Mate monitor – but the Oregon has the edge. It’s got rugged styling and a well-designed, clear display. It’s perfect for the beach too, what with its waterproof casing and all.
