Opera launches online app store

One app store to rule them all, one to find them, one to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

Opera has announced a mobile store to rule them all, dishing out apps for all the big players including Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm, Android and Blackberry OS. Apple is notably absent from the list, but fear not as plans to embrace the Apple App Store are in motion.

The ambitious project hopes to demolish single platform app stores and open up millions of potential Opera users to developers worldwide. The store can be accessed via Opera’s mobile and mini browsers and automatically detects your OS so you can jump straight in and prod away.

The Opera Publisher Portal is also set to launch next week, allowing app developers to publish directly to the mobile store. All in all it’s good news for developers and should encourage innovation beyond that of the standard ‘HD fart app’. Should, not will.
